Newport News Police say they have arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with two sexual assaults that occurred in January.

The first assault occurred on January 1st, just before 10:30 p.m. A 22-year-old Newport News woman reported that she was picked up by a man she had been talking to online. They were supposed to go to his residence but the man instead took her to the rear of a business in the Newmarket South Shopping Center and raped her. The suspect then drove away and left the victim in the parking lot.

The second assault occurred on January 19th around 6:30 a.m. A 24-year-old Newport News woman reported that she had been talking to a man over the internet for several months.

The suspect contacted the woman on the morning of the 19th and wanted her to come out with him. When the victim said she was sick, the suspect offered to take her to get medicine. The man picked the victim up and did take her to retrieve some cold medicine, but then drove to the rear of the Midtown Community Center, took the victim’s cell phone, and sexually assaulted her. He then drove away and left her in the parking lot.

The suspect has been identified as 26-year-old Lee Michael McMurray of Hampton. He was arrested at his home just after 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 7th. He has been charged with rape, sodomy, robbery, and two counts of abduction. He is now in the Newport News City Jail.
