Woman arrested after overnight fire in Newport News

A woman has been arrested for arson and malicious wounding following a structure fire that occurred overnight in Newport News.

The Newport News Fire Department received a call for the fire in the 1100 block of 18th street at 11:59 p.m.

Crews arrived to find smoke and fire showing from the front of the structure. They immediately began search and rescue operations.

A burn victim was found outside the structure.

The search was deemed all clear and the fire under control at 12:15 a.m.

Medics provided treatment to the burn victim and they were transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center.

The residents did not require assistance from the Red Cross.

The fire was found to be incendiary in nature and a suspect was developed.

Kimberly Renee Smith, 46, was arrested on charges of arson and malicious wounding.
