Update: Woman shot by police in Newport News now charged

Update: Laura K. Brown, 29, has been arrested and charged for brandishing a firearm after she was shot by police on March 3rd. 

She has been charged with one count of assault and battery and attempting to enter the property of another with the intent to damage property in connection with an incident that happened on March 2nd. She is accused of trying to get inside of a home to assault a resident there. 

She is now in the custody of the Newport News City Jail. 

Newport News, Va. -A 29-year-old woman was injured on Monday after officers fired shots in Newport News while responding to a call about a disorderly female.

Calls came in at about 4:34 p.m. The caller told police that the woman was inside of a truck and was known to carry a gun.

Three officers arrived in the 900 block of Hollymeade Circle and approached the vehicle where the woman was located officials say.

They say as they approached, the woman displayed her weapon. Officials say the officers then instructed the woman to drop her weapon. Officers then fired shots. The woman was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The officers were not injured.

Police recovered a handgun at the scene.

Police say the woman was reported to be involved in an attempted aggravated assault at the same residence on Sunday.  The woman apparently got into a physical fight with a 29-year-old man who lives at the residence. This incident is currently being investigated.
