Update: Man arrested, charged in Newport News murder

Update: Shawn Anthony House turned himself into police a little after 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Newport News, Va. – Police are investigating a homicide that happened Saturday night in the 2100 block of Madison Ave.

When units arrived they found 26-year-old Laran Tarel Strawter from Portsmouth inside of an apartment at Newport Harbor Apartments suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body.  He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead around 12:00am Sunday morning.

Witnesses tell police there was a small gathering at the apartment when Strawter and a man known to him got into an argument outside.  During the argument Strawter was shot and then ran back into the apartment where police found his body.

Detectives have obtained warrants charging 26-year-old Shawn Anthony House with first degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The investigation is ongoing and Police are asking anyone with information to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
