Coast Guard medevacs man from tanker 10 miles off Fort Story

Portsmouth, Va. — The Coast Guard medevaced a 29-year-old man Friday evening from a tanker approximately 10 miles east of Fort Story.

The captain of the Asphalt Sailor, a 355-foot tanker, contacted Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads Command Center at approximately 5:30 p.m. reporting a crewmember was suffering from abdominal pain and in need of assistance.

A 45-foot Response Boat from Coast Guard Station Little Creek was dispatched to assist.

The boat crew arrived at approximately 6:50 p.m., transferred the man aboard their boat and took him to Virginia Beach Fishing Center in Rudee Inlet.

He was then transported by ambulance to Virginia Beach General Hospital where he is in stable condition.
