Portsmouth, Va. – The Elizabeth River Tunnels (ERT) Project team, in partnership with VDOT, will remove the Interstate 264 (I-264) pedestrian bridge near Frederick Blvd. overnight on Monday, March 10 for construction activities associated with the Martin Luther King (MLK) Extension Project.

Project crews will need to close I-264 in both directions from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. between Frederick Blvd. and Portsmouth Blvd. to remove the structure.

Due to the nature of construction, dates are subject to change and are weather dependent.

I-264 Detour:

• I-264 East Detour: Motorists traveling on I-264 East towards Norfolk will detour onto Portsmouth Blvd. and back onto I-264 at Frederick Blvd.

• I-264 West Detour: Motorists traveling on I-264 West towards Suffolk will detour onto Frederick Blvd. and back onto I-264 at Portsmouth Blvd.

Pedestrian bridge removal will provide crews access to widen the interstate in anticipation of the new MLK Extension.

Permanent sidewalk improvements were made to facilitate the detour.

Detour signs informing pedestrians of the bridge’s closure have been placed. The bridge closes to pedestrians Monday, March 3, 2014. A new bridge over I-264 is scheduled for installation by the end of 2014.

Completion of the MLK Extension will create an efficient, connected transportation network, providing direct access between the Downtown and Midtown tunnels. Additionally, new changeable message signs on the MLK Extension will improve communication of traffic conditions to motorists.
