Several school districts in Hampton Roads are holding classes this Presidents’ Day to make up for days missed because of the snow.
But the debate continues in Virginia Beach over using Saturdays to make up snow days.
NewsChannel 3’s Darragh Copley is live in Virginia Beach at Kempsville High School with details:
Students in Newport News, Norfolk, and Suffolk are going to school today to make up their snow days.
But students in Virginia Beach still have two Saturdays to go to make up for missed days.
Now, the Virginia Beach Education Association - a group that supports teachers - is calling on the superintendent change that.
Students had their first make up day this past Saturday.
There are two more on the calendar.
The Virginia Beach Education Association says the additional days are not needed.
Five days were missed because of the snow, but the group argues Virginia Beach already has three additional days built into the school calendar, and students and teachers have already made up two.
"We are asking them to waive them, we want them to waive those Saturdays. We want them to bring it back up and say, okay, let's waive these days," says Trenace Riggs of the Virginia Beach Education Association.
The superindentent claims it is not just about the days missed, but hours.
She says high school students are required to have a certain number of hours.
But NewsChannel 3 found out that argument is based on five hours - and the district can waive those.
