Hampton, Va. - Cars speed by on a residential street in Hampton. No sidewalks and the narrow roadway make for a dangerous place to walk for anyone, let alone a 2-year-old little boy.

Mary Lewis was driving down Shelton Road Friday morning when she spotted the toddler.

"It’s not right to have little kids running out like that," she says. "All I know is he said he was me and he's two."

Lewis says the boy was wandering aimlessly.

"He was walking around in jammies and a sleeper and he had a toy pair of keys in his hand walking down the street,” Lewis says. “He said nanny's sleeping."

Nanny turned out to be the boy's mother, 28-year-old Melissa Grant. Police say Grant fell asleep with her son, but at some point he woke up and walked out.

Lewis says she asked a woman nearby to call 911. When officers got there, at first they couldn't find his mom. About an hour later they took him home and mom was charged.

Grant lives one street over on Smiley Road. Police charged her with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

The little boy wasn't hurt.

"I’m just glad he's safe," Lewis says.
