The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch from noon Tuesday until noon Wednesday for most of the Outer Banks and an additional winter storm watch for areas of southeastern Virginia from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday afternoon.

For southeastern Virginia, this includes Newport News, Hampton, Williamsburg, Poquoson, James City County, York County, Gloucester County, Middlesex County, Mathews County, Sussex County, Surry County, Southampton County, Isle of Wight County, and Franklin.

A winter storm watch means there is a potential for significant snow, sleet, or ice accumulations that may impact travel.

The weather service expects snow and sleet accumulation of up to 1 to 2  inches in the Outer Banks along with up to a quarter 1/10 inch of ice.

Snow and sleet will affect the area through the day Tuesday. There may be a break Tuesday evening before more wintry weather affects the area in the form of freezing rain, sleet, and snow late Tuesday night through Wednesday morning.

Roads – especially bridges and overpasses – will become treacherous on Tuesday and remain hazardous through Wednesday morning. The weather should transition to all rain Wednesday afternoon with road conditions improving.

Winds will be from the northeast at 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.
