Elizabeth City, Va. - Eastern North Carolina saw nearly 30 wrecks after snow came down Friday, marking the third time the area has seen snow in one month.

“We had 9 wrecks total in the city, and between Pasquotank and Camden County, there were 28 wrecks between midnight last night and nine this morning,” said Captain J.D. Young with the Elizabeth City Police Department.

Most of the accidents happened on bridges where the snow had melted and turned to black ice.

“We did obviously prepare for the last snow a couple of weeks ago, and we turned out extremely well with that, but when you get something that popped up like last night, it is just those couple of bridges that were not treated, obviously we had issues on,” said Young.

Ironically, one inch of snow caused more accidents than when nearly a foot came down.

Elizabeth City Emergency Manager said the price tag of the storms for the city will be up to $20,000, but the real expense is going to be seen by utility customers.

In Elizabeth City during the cold months, emergency officials estimate utility bills are going to be a quarter million dollars more than usual.
