Overnight snow in southern Chesapeake and Northeastern North Carolina made a mess of the roads - and had a lot of kids starting school late.

One of the crashes was on Shawboro Road in Moyock.

And even more people tried to navigate icy spots.

It was a slow start for drivers heading to Virginia from North Carolina when icy roads caused several accidents this morning.

"I saw six," says Clarence, who has a daily commute in the Currituck area.

Clarence's 20 minute commute to work from Camden to Currituck turned into two hours with all the congestion clogging Route 168.

"There wasn't that much snow, it was the black ice."

Black ice became a major problem, especially on bridges and overpasses.

"They've been spinning all around, running off the road, going back and forth."

Troopers responded to numerous crashes across the Northeastern North Carolina region, including one on Route 168 near Shawboro Road in Moyock.

According to NCDOT, all available crews started at daybreak, laying down salt and sand across the area when they first got reports of slick spots.

"When I left my yard, I checked the highway seven miles that way, there wasn't no black ice. But when you're going 55, you just run right into it, just like, boom! Right there for it."
