Norfolk, Va. - Chuck and Bobbie Howe left Norfolk Circuit Court Thursday happy to be alive and even happier they were able to witness Jesse Bishop taking responsibility for what he did.

In October, the 37-year-old attacked them, cutting their necks with a chef's knife and leaving them to die.

"He put us through hell and we've had nightmares and now that our hell is over, his hell is just starting and it's going to last a long, long time,” said Chuck.

Bishop lived with the couple for more than two years.

In an emotional interview only on NewsChannel 3, the two described the horrifying details of the attack, just days after being released from the hospital.

Now, months later, their physical wounds have pretty much healed up.

But, they still have a lot of questions.

"I just don't understand why he did this to us,” said Bobbie.

They believe drugs and the need for money had something to do with it.

And, Bishop's family thinks drugs had everything to do with it.

During a phone call Thursday, Bishop's family told NewsChannel 3 he deserves to serve time for what he did, but he's not the monster everyone is making him out to be.

As for the Howe's, they're just relieved the judge accepted Bishop's guilty plea.

They'll be at his sentencing in May where they'll ask the court to apply the maximum sentence of 60 years in prison.

But, even that, Bobbie says won't take away her personal feelings of guilt.

"I blame myself for bringing him into the house and for him injuring my husband, which I will probably never get over,” said Bobbie.
