Tolls at the Midtown and Downtown Tunnels have been up for a few days, and there are a few people out there who are a bit confused about the process.

They believe if they are not made to stop and pay at a toll booth that they’ve escaped paying the tolls. That is until they get a bill in the mail.

Mike Garrett made sure to get his EZ Pass before tolls started this weekend at the Downtown and Midtown tunnels so he could get the cheapest rate.

But it seems some folks did not get the message.

Doug Campbell drove through the tunnel this morning and did not know he would have to pay $5 dollars for his round trip, instead of $2 with an EZ Pass.

According to Elizabeth River Crossings, of the nearly 100,000 trips made through the tunnel on the first weekday of tolling, about 40% didn`t pay with an EZ Pass.

Leila Rice with ERC says the company is still continuing to get the message out by putting up more than 75 signs around the entrances to both tunnels warning drivers.
