Suffolk, Va. – King’s Fork High School was evacuated Monday morning around 7:45 a.m. due to an odor of smoke detected in the building, according to Bethanne Bradshaw of Suffolk Public Schools.

The building was evacuated as a precaution.

Fire department crews arrived and conducted a building inspection. Students and staff were allowed back inside the school around 8:35 a.m.

Students were given the opportunity to eat breakfast, and an adjustment was made to lunch time to allow the full amount of allotted time for both exams.

The cause of the smoke smell was a lighting ballast, officials say.
