Norfolk, Va. - February means more tolls in Hampton Roads.
On Saturday, if you drove through the midtown or downtown tunnel you had to pay.
Drivers with an EZ Pass will now pay $.75 in off-peak hours and $1.00 for trips through the tunnel in peak hours.
Peak hours are considered from 5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
If you do not have a pass you will also have to pay $1.50 processing fee.
According to V-DOT your tolls will help pay for construction to improve the existing downtown tunnel and expand the midtown tunnel. The existing midtown tunnel is getting ungrades and in the future both lanes will head into Norfolk; meanwhile, a new midtown tunnel is being built with two lanes headed into Portsmouth. Toll money will also go to maintain the conditions of the tunnels in the future.
According to VDOT officials, nearly 79,000 E-ZPass transponders have been purchased since November by Hampton Roads drivers, exceeding their goal by nearly 4,000.
EZ Pass Service Centers will be open Sunday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
