Fire in the 1200 Block of 25th Street

Newport News, Va. – Twenty people are without a home after crews in Newport News put out two fires in the Southeast Community on Monday afternoon.

The first fire happened in the 1200 block of 25th Street and calls came in just before noon about the incident.

Fire crews found smoke coming from a 3-story home. They were able to contain the fire quickly, but they had to open up areas in the walls to be sure the fire was out. They had it under control at 12:19 p.m.

They say it started on the front porch and officials say it was accidental. The damage from the fire is estimated to be $10,000.00. The house has now been condemned. Crews say 16 people were displaced because the house was divided into five apartments.
