Today we honor Army Specialist Jason Allen Smallwood.
He served with North Carolina's Army National Guard from May 2009 until November 5th, 2012.
He was a combat engineer with the 883rd sapper company based in Winston Salem.
He performed routine clearance of IED's -- paving a safe passage for our troops.
Sadly, his mom told newschannel three, he lost his battle with PTSD after a year long deployment in Afghanistan. She wanted to honor her son by raising awareness about the seriousness of the illness.
Specialist Smallwood earned numerous awards and commendation medals, including the Purple Heart.
Specialist Smallwood was a 2006 graduate of Gates County high school.
He was 24 years old. We thank him for his service.
