Mike Shanahan has been fired by the Washington Redskins.

Shanahan met with team owner Daniel Snyder this morning at Redskins Park. The meeting was scheduled for 9 a.m.

Shanahan will be owed $7 million for the last year remaining on his contract. His coaching staff, which includes his son Kyle, have also been fired. They will be owed approximately $6 million in salary.

Shanahan was the eighth coach for the Redskins since Dan Snyder purchased the team.

Snyder released a statement addressing the issue on Monday morning:

"Redskins fans deserve a better result,” Snyder said. “We thank Mike for his efforts on behalf of the Redskins. We will focus on what it takes to build a winning team, and my pledge to this organization and to this community is to continue to commit the resources and talent necessary to put this team back in the playoffs."

The burgundy and gold lost their thirteenth game of the year Sunday to the New York Giants - 20 to 6. The Redskins lost their last eight games of the season. Their 3 and 13 record is their worst since 1994.

Shanahan had a 24-40 overall record as head coach of the Redskins.

Adam Schefter with ESPN tweeted that the Redskins' candidate list is likely to include Jay Gruden, Mike Zimmer, Lovie Smith. He says the Redskins inquired through a third party about David Shaw.

Redskins GM Bruce Allen spoke during a press conference on Monday afternoon and says he was "99%" sure after the Dallas game that there would be a coaching change, but Shanahan's staff gave the Redskins the best chance to beat the Giants.

Allen said they will not publicize which coaches they are looking at to replace Shanahan. He says they are looking for best leader regardless of system.

"I'm going to look for the person who describes what he wants to do the best," he said.
