Norfolk, Va. – Firefighters pull out the jaws of life to rescue a couple trapped inside a SUV after an accident on Little Creek Road and Granby Street.

Just before 1 p.m., at the peak of lunch hour, police say a Nissan Xterra and black truck collided.

A man and woman were trapped inside the Xterra until first responders were able to get them out using the jaws of life. Both were taken on stretchers in an ambulance to the hospital. Police say they will be okay.

“It took them just a little bit to get them out of there, but they got the whole roof off and took them out,” said Jennifer Limpert.

Limpert works near the intersection, and like many of her coworkers rushed out after the accident to see if they could help.

“It’s a bad corner, I mean there is a lot of traffic at this corner and people are not always paying attention, or in a rush,” said Amy Claussen, who works across the street.

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident, but the driver of the truck told Newschannel 3 he was stopped at the red light when the Xterra came into the intersection at full speed, hit the truck on the side and flipped over.

Little Creek Road was closed at the intersection for about an hour.
