Update: The Bonner Bridge could be back open in a week or up to 90 days according to NCDOT chief engineer Jerry Jennings.

It all depends on how the bridge repairs are going.

With the closure of the bridge, another ferry run from Stumpy Point to Rodanthe has been added.

Previous: Dredging operations were completed Sunday night on the Bonner Bridge by crews with the North Caroline Department of Transportation, and the Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company’s Alaska dredge vessel.

NCDOT says initial scans of the bridge are promising but it will be several days before they can determine if the dredging was successful.

The bridge was closed on December 3rd after sand had eroded from bridge pilings at Bent 166.

Approximately 30,000 cubic yards of sand were pumped during the weekend dredging  from the main navigation channel of the Oregon Inlet.

Crews with NCDOT’s Location and Survey’s Unit conducted an underwater sonar survey of the area around Bent 166 on Monday. Another dive and sonar survey will take place Wednesday after the sand settles and compacts.

In addition to work taking place on the support structure underneath the bridge, NCDOT is also performing a survey of the deck in the area of Bent 166 to make sure that there has not been any movement of the bridge.
