Oregon Inlet, Nc. – In hopes of getting the Bonner Bridge back open on N.C. 12, dredging started today.

The Herbert C. Bonner Bridge has been closed for the last five days. NCDOT (North Carolina Department of Transportation) made this emergency closure after realizing that too much sand had eroded from the support structure of the bridge.

In order to restore the Bonner Bridge into working order, officials have started dredging today. With the help of the dredge barge, “Alaska”, the process will put sand back underneath the bridge. Dredging should only take two days to complete as long as weather permits. Once dredging is complete, NCDOT will have to inspect the work to see what else will be needed to reopen the Bonner Bridge.
