Norfolk, Va. – Today, Virginia car owners were able to have their VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) permanently etched into their vehicles. The Norfolk Police Department and Virginia State Police hosted the “Pick 17”, a free VIN etching event in the parking lot of Harbor Park Stadium.

The event lasted from 11am-2pm. During this time frame, vehicle owners were able to have their VIN numbers etched onto a vehicle window or sunroof. Cars, RV’s, ATV’s, trucks, SUV’s and motorcycles were able to participate in this event.

The event was open to all and free to the public. Vehicle owners were asked to bring proof of ownership (registration and title) to take part in the VIN etching. This event was held in cooperation with the Virginia State Police HEAT (Help Eliminate Auto Theft) program.

Virginia State Police recommend that vehicle owners always remember to remove their keys from the ignition. They say that 30% of cars stolen are the result of keys left in the ignition.
