Virginia Beach, Va. - A sailor, family man, and servant of God: That's how friends say they'll remember 27-year-old Christian Montes.

Beach Police say Montes was standing outside of his disabled Ford Escort Tuesday morning when officials say a school bus hit him. Montes died at the scene.

Mark Neymeyer met Montes about a year ago at Grace Bible Church in Virginia Beach.

“He was a soft, gentle man who loved his country and a man who would defend it all in one breath," says Neymeyer.

As Virginia Beach bus #66 was headed for Bayside Health and Science Academy, Neymeyer says Montes was on his way to work. They were both going north down Holland road. 35 students were on board during the deadly accident.

Neymeyer says Montes lived for his two kids, a 2-month old son and 3-year-old little girl.

"This military guy who you know can take care of himself yet has a little binky tucked behind his ear and not afraid to show it and just be a total dad, in love with his family," he says.

Neymeyer says Montes's wife and family are in shock, but says they are surrounded by the love of fellow church members.

NewsChannel 3 asked him how he thought Montes would be remembered. “Oh my goodness, with a contagious smile,” Neymeyer replied. “Loved everyday. He really did.”
