UPDATE: Man accused in Norfolk shooting now in custody

UPDATE: Police say they have now arrested Jalil Sharpe, who has been accused in a shooting on Beacon Hill Circle and Halter Lane. He was arrested in Norfolk without incident police say. 

Norfolk, Va. - Norfolk Police are now investigating a homicide after they say a man was shot on Wednesday night and later died.

They say the shooting happened at around 8 p.m. on Beacon Hill Circle and Halter Lane in Poplar Halls.

Officers found the man, identified as 21-year-old Jontaz Tarell Moore of Chesapeake, suffering from a gunshot wound.

He was awake and alert when officers arrived.

He was taken to the hospital for treatment. Police say Moore died early Thursday as a result of his injuries.

Police say the shooting happened during a possible robbery attempt.

Neighbors tell NewsChannel 3 that they heard one or two gunshots and the saw a man sprint down Beacon Hill and another man sitting in the street yelling out that he had been shot.

They say it looked like he was hit in the stomach.

Victor Roberts says he has lived in the neighborhood for 30 years and this is the first shooting he's known about in the area.

With no street light and a vacant lot, Roberts says this section of Halter Lane has been a problem for a while now.

"Every time there's a shooting, it's one time too many and it makes you very, very uncomfortable. It makes you feel bad that you haven't spent more time trying to get a light for that post," says Roberts.

Jilil Jaquan SharpePolice identified  20-year-old Jalil J. Sharpe as a suspect in the shooting on Thursday. Sharpe is described as having a thin build, 6’4, 155 lbs, dreadlocks (long) hairstyle, goatee and medium complexion.

Warrants have been issued for robbery, malicious wounding, and two counts of use of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
