Newport News, Va – Newport News Police are investigating an attempted robbery and shooting that happened in the 600 block of 12th Street around 1:46pm Sunday.

Police say a 35-year old Newport News man riding his bicycle stopped by a pair of young men near some mailboxes to ask for directions. That is when the young men tried to rob him.

The man was able to ride away on his bicycle but not before one of the young men shot him in the elbow.

His injury is not life-threatening. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Sadly, this area is no stranger to crime. Just a week and a half ago, a corner store was robbed by two males and a female. That time it was caught on surveillance tape.

In the tape, you can see the trio ducking down before they jump on the counter to grab the cash. The robbers then forced the store clerk to put his hands on the back of his head at gunpoint. Police say they got away with more than a thousand dollars.

There was another incident while children were getting off the bus in the midst of gunfire. That makes a total of three incidents in this Newport News area in the past month.

For this very reason, many Newport News residents are afraid to talk to police but want law enforcement to take action for the future of their little ones.
