Newport News, Va. – Today, The Newport News Police Department helped others to take action against crime.

Help Eliminate Auto Theft program (H.E.A.T), and Newport News officers helped people engrave their own VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) in their cars for free. Police say this will help people recover their vehicle if it is stolen by thieves who try to remove the vehicle's original VIN. With the help of police, the numbers were engraved in concealed locations in the cars.

Participants also had a chance to register for cool electronic gadgets like iPads, GPS devices and laptop computers. The police department will be hosting more events like these until the end of the year.

These events are scheduled to take place on the following Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m

  • October 26, 2013 at Newport News City Park
  • November 30, 2013 at Patrick Henry Mall, 12300 Jefferson Avenue
