Norfolk, Va. - Things are running as usual at Naval Station Norfolk right now after tragedy struck a Navy yard in Washington, D.C. Monday morning.

Navy officials say they're monitoring the situation at the Washington Navy Yard where at least one gunman opened fire killing several people and injuring others.

Right now, none of the local Hampton Roads Bases are on any kind of heightened alert.

Officials say the shooting in Washington happened at the home of the Naval Sea Systems Command or "NAVSEA."

That command engineers, builds, buys and maintains Navy ships and submarines.

It has facilities all across the world including here in Hampton Roads. The Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth is one of those facilities. It is where Navy officials say they repair carriers and submarines

They also say it's the second largest command within NAVSEA with around 9,000 civilian and military workers.

Military officials tell NewsChannel 3 they're unaware of any enhanced security locally or at any of their other commands following the shooting.

Navy officials wouldn't go into detail about security measures on their bases, but they do say that all installations in Hampton Roads train and hold active shooter drills in case something like what happened in Washington happens here.
