Isle of Wight/Newport News - Stud installation on the grid deck of the James River Bridge (Route 17) is set to begin on Tuesday, Sept. 17, weather conditions permitting.

The installation of the studs, a project to provide enhanced vehicle traction on the bridge, had been scheduled to begin after the Labor Day weekend. However, work was delayed while the contractor, Corman Construction, developed a process for collecting the stud debris to prevent it from entering the waterway under the bridge. Environmental protection is a standard requirement for construction projects over waterways, officials say.

Crews have been performing preliminary work in the roadway since late August and will begin working under single-lane closures starting Tuesday, Sept. 17, in the southbound direction.

Work will occur throughout the day and nighttime hours to install the studs, except during peak traffic times.

No full weekend closures are planned to occur in either direction.

Motorists should anticipate minor delays.

The project completion date remains set for November 1, 2013.

All lanes will be open to James River Bridge traffic during the following times:

Route 17 South

Evening Rush Hour: Monday through Friday, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Weekends: Friday, 3 p.m. to Sunday at 7 p.m.

Route 17 North

Morning Rush Hour: Monday through Friday, 5 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Weekends: Saturday, 5 a.m. to Monday at 9 a.m.
