Newport News, Va.- The Mariner's Museum is hoping thousands will take action and help break the Guinness World Record for "largest gathering of pirates" later this month.

The Guinness World Record for "largest gathering of pirates" is currently held by Hastings, England with 14,231 pirates.

The Mariner's Museum is hoping to smash that record during the first-ever Pirate Festival at Mariner's Museum Park on Saturday, September 21, 2013.

The official pirate count will happen at 2 p.m., but museum officials are asking everyone to show up early to make sure they get counted.

NewsChannel 3 Took Action on Thursday to find out exactly what qualifies as a pirate costume in order to count for the Guinness World Record.

Nancy Newman, Special Events Coordinator for the Mariner's Museum, says while they'll certainly accept elaborate and historical pirate costumes, you actually don't have to put too much time or money into finding one.

In fact, the Guinness Record will recognize someone dressed as a pirate with these four requirements:

  1. A white or striped-shirt.
  2. A pirate hat or bandana.
  3. Pirate pants or a wench skirt, which includes capris, three-quarter pants and roll-up khakis.
  4. A pirate accessory item, which includes an eye patch, gold jewelry, a compass, a telescope, a Jolly Roger flag, a toy sword or a stuffed parrot.
