NewsChannel 3 is proud to be a part of the 9/11 Heroes Run taking place in Virginia Beach. The Travis Manion Foundation works every day to honor the fallen by challenging the living. By participating in the run, you have a chance to not only help the 31 Heroes Project but also Vigilant Watch.

Krystal Jacobs has benefitted from the amazing work done by Vigilant Watch. Her daughter has cerebral palsy and she was lifting her every day in and out of a wheelchair to get her into their home.  She says Vigilant Watch changed her life and since them she has committed herself to volunteering for them. She challenges you to think of the last time a first responder was there for you.

Running in the Heroes Run this Sunday at the Virginia Beach SportsPlex will make sure Vigilant Watch receives funding to help them do their good deeds. Jacobs recommends making this your way to say thank you.

“We have helped almost 30 first responders' families in one way or another,” says Vigilant Watch President Wayne Sandlin.

While serving the Seven Cities, the Eastern Shore and Accomack, the group steps in during times of financial hardship. Sometimes they simply just offer support and find a way to make things happen as they did in Jacobs’ case.  She is a civilian with the VBFD and technically does not fall under the assistance guidelines. However, Vigilant Watch worked to bring attention to her situation and raised enough funds to not only build a ramp for her daughter's wheelchair but they even did some of the work!

The commitment to service makes the Travis Manion Foundation and Vigilant Watch a perfect fit. One was started to honor a fallen Marine. The other was started to honor first responders.

“He had a motto, 'If not me then who?' ",  explains Sandlin.
