Elizabeth City, NC - Two teens are now in custody and charged with attempted first degree murder in Elizabeth City, police tell NewsChannel 3.

It happened on Thursday at approximately 7:58 p.m. Elizabeth City State University Police arrived at Williams Hall (Gymnasium) due to a suspected fight.

When crews arrived, they did not see anyone fighting, but saw a large crowd of students standing in front of Williams Hall.

It was determined that a man had been chased by several non-students toward the west side of campus, to a public street, Hoffler Street.

At 8:01 p.m., a caller made a report of gun shots fired on Hoffler Street to Pasquotank Camden Dispatch Center.

The caller also reported a person had been shot. That person was later identified as an ECSU student. The victim was transported to a medical facility and is listed in stable condition.

Later on, Elizabeth City Police and University Police were dispatched and received information of the suspect’s vehicle. The vehicle was stopped on William J. and Helen Muldrow Way, near Griffin Hall and the Thomas-Jenkins Building where University Police is housed.

The four male occupants, non-students, were detained and transported to EC Police Department for interviews.

According to John Manley, chief of University Police, there was no evidence that shots were fired on the campus, nor was the suspect’s vehicle involved in a crash as reported by The Daily Advance.

Police say there was no further threat to the campus, but officers remained vigilant throughout the evening.

Emergency notifications informed students, staff, and faculty of the matter and that people had been taken into custody. There was no ongoing threat to the campus.

Warrants were obtained for attempted first degree murder on 17-year-old Rayshaun Maurice Baum of Elizabeth City and 17-year-old Kahari Hopson of Elizabeth City.

Each is under a $75,000 secured bond. They are being held at the Albemarle District Jail.

The investigation is led by the EC Police Department with assistance from University Police. The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Capt. John Young with the EC Police Department, 252-335-4321 or ECSU Chief John Manley, 252-335-3266.

University Police will increase the number of officers patrolling campus throughout the week, especially during peak hours.
