Currituck County, N.C. – A Knots Island teen has pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the stabbing death of her newborn baby girl in 2011.

Rebecca Blackmore was sentenced to 125 months to 159 months in prison, meaning she will spend at least the next decade behind bars. She had originally faced first degree murder charges in the killing, which happened when she was 16.

Blackmore initially gave birth to the girl in her family’s Knott’s Island home, then had a family member take her to Chesapeake Regional Hospital.

While at the hospital she told doctors she had given birth to a stillborn baby and the body was in a closet in the home.

A medical examiner determined that the baby was in fact born alive, but was stabbed to death.
