Norfolk, Va. - Two years ago Friday, Susan Hannsz became a grandmother. But instead of celebrating her granddaughter’s birth, Hannsz is mourning her death.

"We saw her more in death than we ever saw her in life," Hannsz says.

She recalls flying from her home in Texas after baby Aubrey had been rushed to the hospital in January 2011.

"When we were coming into Norfolk, I turned to my husband and I said 'she's not going to make it,' I just had this feeling and I knew she wasn't going to make it," she remembers.

At just four months old, Aubrey was violently shaken, strangled and sexually assaulted by her mother's live in boyfriend, 24-year-old Micah Patterson. After a four day trial, Patterson was sentenced to life plus 60 years in prison.

"Not one ounce of remorse,” Hannsz says.” No emotion, cold, direct, no feelings. Nothing."

Standing over her tiny grave where Hannsz placed two small pink roses, she can't help but wonder what could have been.

"We’ll never see her go to her prom, we'll never see her graduate from high school, we'll never see all those little things in her life,” she says. “I don't want anybody else to go through this."
