Hampton, Va. - Hampton city officials say the grass is cut along Wind Mill Point Road, but Brandon Honeycutt says it’s not cut enough.

“The guy cut about two feet on each side of the road. Two feet on the side of the road is not enough room for two vehicles and a bike to pass,” Honeycutt said.

He was dressed for his friend Bill Crooker’s funeral, who died while he was riding his motorcycle Sunday night. He blames the city for his friend’s death, and says they didn’t keep up with cutting the high grass.

He thinks it prevented Crooker from seeing the other side of the road.

“How much money is it going to cost to cut this grass? One hour! One hour of time to cut this grass. I know for a fact that if this was cut, he wouldn’t be dead. I lost a good friend, ” he said.

We took a trip to the road today and took a look for ourselves, and we brought a measuring tape.

It measures out to 7 and a half feet.

Then, we drove it to see exactly what Crooker saw seconds before he died. Because of the tall weeds, we could barely see the other side of the road.

“If all this is cut, you’d be able to see straight through this turn,” he added.

Honeycutt told NewsChannel 3 the area used to be taken care of up until a few years ago.

“The grass used to be cut from this section, on back, and on down through here. They used to cut all the way to where the pine trees are here – to the edge of the pine trees,” he said.

But not anymore, and now he’s taking matters into his own hands.

“Do I have to get out here and cut it? That might be what it takes. Will I get in trouble for it? Probably, but if that’s what it’s going to take, I’m going to get it done 'cause I will not ride my bike down this road until it’s done.”
