Virginia Beach, Va. (WTKR)- Former Virginia Beach Mayor Meyera Oberndorf received a Project Lifesaver bracelet on Tuesday.

Oberndorf, who served as Mayor of Virginia Beach from 1988-2008, is battling Alzheimer's disease.

The Project Lifesaver bracelet is a small transistor radio worn by those at-risk of wandering due to various conditions so that they can be easily tracked down by police if they wander away.

"That includes folks with Alzheimer's, varying forms of dementia and adults and kids with autism," explained Virginia Beach Master Police Officer Allen Perry. "These are some of our most vulnerable citizens and we need to make sure we are the most diligent in protecting."

Oberndorf is the 287th client for the Virginia Beach Project Lifesaver program, which is the largest of its kind in the world.
