Norfolk, Va. - School's out - and that means, it's time for summer camp. The fun is underway at the first-ever Sheriff Bob McCabe Foundation Youth Summer Camp.

For the next five weeks, Norfolk students, ages 10-14, will enjoy a free camp experience, courtesy of the sheriff’s foundation, officials tell NewsChannel 3. This unique experience is also made possible through a partnership with Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast and Norfolk Public Schools. Norfolk Public Schools will provide daily lunches and transportation to and from camp. The Sertoma Club of Norfolk provided assistance with coordinating the camp.

Campers will try canoeing on Mason Creek, learn archery skills, participate in daily team sporting events, enjoy swimming, educational arts and crafts sessions and also learn VIRGINIA RULES - a program which teaches school-age students how Virginia laws apply to minors.

The five, fun-filled weeks of activities take place at Camp Apasus on Granby Street, a Girl Scouts property.

“I want to provide children with an opportunity to have memorable summer moments while keeping them busy and safe,” said Sheriff McCabe.

The second week of camp will be dedicated to an all-girl session to allow the girls to earn Girl Scout badges that address the Scouting motto that Scouting builds courage, confidence and character.
