Virginia Beach, Va. - A project to restore and replenish the beach in Sandbridge is nearly complete.

By the end of the month, crews should be finished pumping nearly 2 million cubic yards of sand onto the 5-mile stretch between Dam Neck and the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge.

Those crews will then move to another beach nourishment project in Virginia Beach between 40th and 70th streets at the North End, according to Pam Spaugy with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers Norfolk District.

The projects aim to restore sections of the beach washed away due to erosion from storms over the years.

The Sandbridge project extends the beach between 40 and 50 feet from the dunes, much to the delight of those of frequent the area.

"We’re happy the school year is over and we’re just ready to chill out so this is going to give us lots of sand to do it with," explained Patti Loud who was visiting the beach from Chesapeake on Thursday.
