The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of Hampton Roads in the ‘Moderate Risk’ area for today. (Northeast North Carolina is in the ‘Slight Risk’ area)

‘Moderate Risk’ may sound average but for this region it is actually fairly uncommon. The Moderate and High risk areas are much more common in the midwest.

We will likely start to see storms move into the region this afternoon/early evening. Williamsburg around 4pm, Southside around 5 and coastal areas around 6 pm.

Wind will be the big issue! Expect winds 10-20 with gusts to 30 as the front moves in. Wind gusts will be even higher within the storms.

Hail, Tornadoes, and Flash Flooding are also possible.

This is the same system that brought severe weather to the upper midwest/lower Great Lakes yesterday with 18 tornado reports, over 100 hail reports, over 150 wind reports. There were 239 total U.S. storm reports yesterday.

Reminder: A storm is ‘Severe’ once it has winds of 58+ mph and/or 1″+ hail.
