Newport News, Va. Public Works and street crews are on alert in Newport News and Hampton as emergency management teams monitor Tropical Storm Andrea.

City officials tell NewsChannel 3 they’ve been checking drains and ditches and getting in touch with management companies of places like City Line apartment complex where there’s been a history of flooding.

“We contact them so they’re aware of it and then notify the residents to move vehicles out of low lying areas if you need to. If they’re elderly and they need to find a different place to go then they have time to do that,” says Chief Scott Liebold with the Newport News Fire Department.

Butta Bean is one of many City Line residents who lost everything when the area flooded last August. He didn’t have flood insurance at the time. But since then, he moved to the second floor so he isn’t too concerned about Tropical Storm Andrea.

“I gotta get my car out of here and I’m okay. I’m gonna be okay,” he says.

But for others like Yosia Montgomery, who still lives in a ground floor apartment, she’s packing a bag just in case.

“Last year, oh man, it came. We walked through and I had my daughter on my shoulders and my boyfriend came and he held my son and we just had bags,” she says.

Liebold says crews are on standby as they monitor the storm. He says as of right now, they will meet early tomorrow morning to assess what happened overnight.
