Disabled veterans can get a break on their personal property taxes in several Hampton Roads cities.

In Virginia Beach, the personal property tax rate for cars is $3.70 for every $100 of assessed value. Qualified cars for disabled veterans receive a reduced rate of $1.50 per $100.

In Hampton, the personal property tax rate for cars is $4.25 for every $100 of assessed value. Disabled veterans get a reduced rate of $0.000001 per $100 of assessed value.

In Newport News, the personal property tax for cars is $4.50 for every $100 of assessed value - a $0.25 increase that took effect at the beginning of the year. Disabled veterans can qualify for a reduced rate of $1.00 for every $100 of assessed value.

The City of Suffolk does not currently offer a reduced rate on personal property taxes for disabled veterans, however, they City Council is now exploring that option.

Folks in Suffolk say a reduced rate would be a good gesture to show disabled veterans that their sacrifices are appreciated.

"It’s one small thing that when they get their bill, they see reduced to do this – and they go yea America cares about me, Suffolk cares about me and I would highly encourage it," explained LeeAnn Reeder.

"Anything we can do to help those people that served – and especially those that are handicapped, I can’t see anyone being opposed to that," stated Bill Kernazitskas.
