Batteries, flashlights and generators are just a few of the items that will be tax free starting this weekend, in an effort to get Virginian’s prepared for hurricanes before the season begins June 1st.

Erin Sutton is an emergency planner with the city of Virginia Beach Emergency Management.

She says people should take advantage of the sales tax holiday to stay ahead of the game even more so this year as forecasters predict another active hurricane season in the Atlantic.

“If you start this week and look at what you need and then plan it out, you can build that kit by the time that you`re looking to use it in our storm season,” says Sutton.

Employees at Lowe`s say you shouldn`t wait until the last minute to prepare for hurricane season. In fact, you should get ready now because once a storm is near our area, items go flying off the shelves.

Starting Saturday through May 31st, selected items with a sales price of $60 or less will be tax exempt.

This includes batteries, tarps, gas or diesel fuel tanks and containers, weather radios, battery operated lanterns and bottled water.

Portable generators are also tax free.

It only applies to generators that cost $1,000 or less.
