Norfolk, Va. - The city of Norfolk wants to charge you more to park.

It's part of a list of rate and fee increases being considered.

Rates for parking meters would go up varying amounts depending on their location.

Some are going up 10 cents per fifteen minutes, meters near the Old Dominion University campus would be a little more.  They could see a 25 cent increase, making the cost $0.50 per half hour.

People aren't exactly thrilled to hear about the increases, but according to the city, it’s the first increase for meters since 2004.

Rates for short term parking would also be raised – that last happened in 2009.

Drivers could also pay up more for parking violations.  Most fees would be increased by five dollars, but a few are a little higher.

Overtime parking at a meter will cost you $25 instead of the current fee of $15.  Parking in front of a fire hydrant – $75 instead of $50.

That's just one area that could see increases.

A real estate tax increase is also being considered - 4 cents per $100.  That would mean about $53 more per year for the average homeowner.

Ambulance service fees and police department records fees are also on a list of proposed increases.

The city council is discussing the budget and these proposed increases at their meeting Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
