A pilot was killed at an air show in Madrid after the historic 1950s plane he was flying plunged to the ground near the main viewing area, crashing into a hanger and bursting into flames.

A spokesman for Spain’s Defense Ministry said the pilot, Ladislao Tejedor Romero, 35, an experienced jet pilot and assistant to Defense Minister Pedro Morenes, died of his injuries in the serious burns unit of Getafe hospital.

A video shows a large plume of smoke rising above the hangars after the crash.

Witnesses say the plane struck power lines.

Spain’s airport authority AENA said no one else other than the pilot was injured. However, Europe Press news agency reported quoting emergency services that two people were transferred to the hospital.
