A bill that's being looked up in the North Carolina General Assembly calls for not arresting people if they have less than an ounce of pot on them.

Instead they've be fined.

Amanda Tripp says if that's the case, she'd probably start smoking pot again.

"You wouldn't get in a lot of trouble," Amanda Tripp of Elizabeth City said. "Just like a fine, like a traffic ticket or whatever yes and there's a lot more people that would also."

Roosevelt Newson says the penalties for simple pot possession are too stiff.

"It messes their reputations up, their records, their chances of getting a job," Newsom said. "The usage is so wide spread that I would like to see some sort of break there for them."

Glenda William doesn't want the Tar Heel State to change its stance on marijuana. Critics call marijuana a gateway drug, William hopes this doesn't open the door for further legalization.

"It'll be something else after that, you know what I'm saying?" William said. "If they allow marijuana now later on they're going to allow what cocaine, crack or whatever and we don't need that."
