Five fires reported on CNU campus (photos)

Newport News, Va. – Five fires have now been reported on the Christopher Newport University campus on Tuesday.

A small fire was reported on the second floor of the David Student Union Center Tuesday afternoon. The call came in at 12:03 p.m. Newport News Fire Chief Lay tells NewsChannel 3 the fire happened on the second floor in a men’s bathroom. The fire was out before firefighters arrived on scene. The building has since reopened.

The second fire was in a women’s bathroom of the Freeman Center. It was put out with a fire extinguisher, according to CNU officials. That building was reopened just before 4 p.m.

A third fire was reported in a men’s restroom of the McMurran Building, according to Lori Jacobs of CNU. The sprinkler system activated and controlled the fire.

Two additional fires have been reported in restrooms at Forbes Hall. They have been extinguished. Physical damage is minimal.

CNU officials say all residence halls are card access only until further notice. Classes have been canceled for the evening but are scheduled to resume tomorrow at 8:00 a.m.

David Student Union, Trible Library, Freeman Center and The Commons remain open.

There have been no injuries reported due to these fires. Physical property damage has been minor.

No cause has been determined and all fires remain under investigation. All fires are being investigated as suspicious.

A State Police fire investigator has been on scene since early afternoon and has the investigative lead. Christopher Newport University, Newport News Fire Marshal’s Office and the ATF are providing support and assistance.
