Elizabeth City, N.C. - A lockdown was lifted at Elizabeth City State University just after 1:00 a.m. Friday morning after shots were fired late Thursday night.

University police confirmed to NewsChannel 3 that shortly after 11 p.m. shots were fired near a wooded area on the eastern perimeter of the campus, and the campus was put on lockdown.

In a news release the University Police and the ECSU Office of University Relations and Marketing said the campus was placed on lockdown at 11:08 p.m.

According to the release, all students were told to return to their residence halls.

Once the residence halls and campus were secured, all visitors were asked to leave campus after being cleared by police.

There were no reports of injuries. Campus police continued to investigate throughout the night and determined that the shots came from a non-student who was on campus.
