Virginia Beach, Va. – April is ‘Month of the Military Child’ – and children of military families will express themselves through artwork, on display at Lynnhaven Mall.

Lynnhaven Mall will exhibit student artwork submitted by Virginia Beach City Public Schools’ students throughout the month of April.

A formal reception to kick off the art exhibit, “The Art of Being a Military Child,” will be held in the mall’s center court Wednesday, April 10, at 6 p.m.

A brief ceremony will be conducted for participants and their families to present awards to first, second, and third place winners at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

Military dignitaries and school personnel are expected to attend.

Landstown High School’s Color Guard and the Corporate Landing Middle School chorus will also attend.

This art show is the culmination of a contest open to all K-12 students in the school division through a partnership between the schools, military school liaison officers at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story and Naval Air Station Oceana-Dam Neck, and Lynnhaven Mall.

Students competing in the contest were required to develop art around topics related to being a military child such as parents/family; teachers/school; military lifestyles; cultures experienced; transitions/changes; wishes; hopes; dreams and life lessons learned.

To recognize the contributions and sacrifices of the nearly two million military children nationally, the Department of Defense officially designated April as Month of the Military Child in 1986.

Currently, more than 22,000 military-connected students are enrolled in VBCPS.

The division is committed to providing support, resources, and enriching programs to enhance the educational experiences of military-connected students and is seeking grants and creating opportunities to actively engage military-connected parents and families in supporting student achievement and outcomes for success.
