Norfolk, Va. - Baseball and spring are synonymous. Neither of them have come to Norfolk yet.

The Norfolk tides were supposed to open up Harbor Park tonight. The joy of baseball's return was squashed by a heavy rain.

First pitch never happened, the game was called.

"You're ready to watch some baseball, eat a hot dog, drink a beer, and then can't because the weather's terrible," said Max Venturo.

Fans filed out of the park. Leaving behind a tarped field, empty seats and deserted concourse.

They got on the light rail, they had hoped to spend their Thursday night with the Tides, not the Tide.

"We had a feeling when we were walking and it was sleeting on us," said Tides fan Aaron Cross. "So you still got to wait and see if they play or not."

The subdued passion of baseball fans will have them weather any conditions to see the local nine.

The six-month season teaches a fan patience. The old saying goes, wait til next year, these fans just have to wait until tomorrow.
