Norfolk, Va. – Hampton Roads Transit will extend operating hours for The Tide to 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights in support of the MEAC basketball tournament and the events surrounding it.

The City of Norfolk has authorized extended hours for light rail service to give people a chance to enjoy some night life after the games have ended for the day.

Normal rail service already was in place in support of the tournament, but was scheduled to end just as some had hoped to linger longer downtown and enjoy an evening in the city.

The 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament is in its 43rd year of intercollegiate competition. Games are taking place at the Scope in downtown while social events are taking place in several locations.

The extended hours mean that The Tide will run on a 30-minute schedule starting at 9:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.

The last through train will leave EVMC/Ft. Norfolk at 1 a.m. Weekday rail service normally ends at 11 p.m. and at midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Patrons who require connecting bus service when using The Tide are encouraged to visit http://www.gohrt.com and click on routes to confirm hours of those connecting routes which will not change.

No changes were announced for ferry service.

Regular Sunday rail service will resume March 17.
