NewsChannel 3 is honoring a Navy sailor who took action and rescued a woman being attacked by dogs in Virginia Beach.

In late February Navy Petty Officer Second Class Christian Alexander was driving on his lunch break in Virginia Beach when he saw two dogs dart into the road.

"Two dogs ran across the road. So I stopped. They looked like they were having a great time," Alexander said.  "I continued going and looked in my rear-view to see what the dogs were up to and I noticed they were attacking the woman and her dog!"

Alexander didn't think twice - he pulled his car over and took action.

"I was in my car like oh man what am I going to do. So I reached down and grabbed the first thing I could which was an ice scraper and jumped out of my car and started screaming at these dogs hoping to scare them away," Alexander stated.

When the screaming didn't work, Alexander put himself in danger, putting himself between the woman and the dogs.

"The dogs were trying to get at her dog, grabbing her by sleeves, pulling them," Alexander said. "Her dog was the same you know very shaken up, scared shaking, she didn’t even know what had happened."

Eventually Alexander was able to get the woman to the safety of his car and the dogs ran off.

NewsChannel 3 honored Alexander on Friday with a People Taking Action Award and a $100 Visa gift card from our community partners at Southern Bank.

A very surprised Alexander was appreciative of the award.

"That’s awesome. You know what I really appreciate it. Yea it’s awesome. Thank you," Alexander said.

Alexander says he just hopes anyone else would do the same if he were in the same position as the woman he saved.

"If that was me, if I was out there getting attacked, if that was one of my nieces or nephews, my grandmother or my mother- I’d want somebody to do the same," Alexander said.
